The 4% rule, tested on 59 start years.

The 4% rule, tested on 59 start years.

Retire with $1,000,000 in the S&P 500 and take $3,333 a month, 4% a year, raised every year with inflation. Run that through every 40-year stretch since 1928, with the returns and the inflation each year actually brought, and the money lasted in 54 of the 59 start years. The five that ran dry began in 1929, 1930, 1966, 1968 and 1969; the worst, 1929, ran out after 21 years and 6 months.
